Business By The Book: Complete Guide of Biblical Principles for the Workplace CustomerReview

Business by the Book is a truly excellent resource that provides guidance for Christian businesspeople to run their business by biblical principles. There are three parts in the book. Part I, Business by the Book, provides a high level view of the importance and value of living your life and running your business in a way that is aligned with God's principles. It even talks about the role your spouse plays in your business. Part II, Critical Policy Decisions, has nine chapters on some very tough issues: leadership, hiring and firing, management selection, pay, borrowing and lending. Part III, Your Business and Your Life, talks about the integration of the two, plus a number of key issues such as incorporation, tithing, and retirement. The book ends with a chapter on Integrating God's Plan. There is even a helpful 48-pg Study Guide in the end, which looks quite useful for personal or small group study.

I appreciated the clear writing style throughout the book, the blend of stories, principles, explanation, and encouragement. The format also allows you to dive right into specific subjects where you might be facing a current challenge. This book seems like a must read and reference for anyone in business.

A Little Book of Language (Little Histories) Overviews

With a language disappearing every two weeks and neologisms springing up almost daily, an understanding of the origins and currency of language has never seemed more relevant. In this charming volume, a narrative history written explicitly for a young audience, expert linguist David Crystal proves why the story of language deserves retelling.

From the first words of an infant to the peculiar modern dialect of text messaging, A Little Book of Language ranges widely, revealing language’s myriad intricacies and quirks. In animated fashion, Crystal sheds light on the development of unique linguistic styles, the origins of obscure accents, and the search for the first written word. He discusses the plight of endangered languages, as well as successful cases of linguistic revitalization. Much more than a history, Crystal’s work looks forward to the future of language, exploring the effect of technology on our day-to-day reading, writing, and speech. Through enlightening tables, diagrams, and quizzes, as well as Crystal’s avuncular and entertaining style, A Little Book of Language will reveal the story of language to be a captivating tale for all ages.

A Little Book of Language (Little Histories) CustomerReview

Is it possible that there are multiple David Crystals? It seems unlikely that just one person can write as many books, give as many interviews, and complete as many projects as he does.

A longtime fan of Crystal, I have to admit I was a little perplexed by A Little Book of Language at first. The subject matter was interesting, as usual, but the style was different. He seemed chattier, and there were so many exclamation points! What was going on?

Since I'd started reading the book immediately upon receiving it, without looking at the descriptions or blurbs, I didn't realize it is aimed at younger readers. Once that little mystery was solved, I settled back in, and found that aside from what this adult perceives as a slightly patronizing tone (but may seem quite innocuous to the age group it is aimed at), the book is quite a good introduction to many language-related topics.

While A Little Book of Language is simple, it is by no means simple-minded. Reading past the occasional clanger ("Not everyone in [Australia] speaks like [Paul Hogan in Crocodile Dundee]. Many Aussies have educated accents too."), I found that there was plenty for older readers to learn as well. For instance, sign languages have "accents" and someone whose native language is American Sign Language might have a distinctive accent when speaking British Sign Language, by holding the thumb straight out rather than close to the forefinger in certain words, for example.

When I was a youngster I read books by Mario Pei, who wrote about language and linguistics for the general reader. I loved his books about word origins and language quirks. Of course, his books, written in the 1960s and 70s, would be seriously out of date now. The studies of language have come a long way in the past few decades. Come to think of it, I can't think of any books that might serve as a general all-purpose introduction to general readers of all ages in the same way that Mario Pei's did, until now. There are plenty of ranting polemics by grammar police. Or if you want more specialized and scholarly writing, there are excellent works by popular linguists such as Seth Lerer, Derek Bickerton, and Steven Pinker. However, for non-academic and generally accessible works on the way language works, you can't beat David Crystal.

Shortlisted

for the Man Booker Prize

A spellbinding novel, at once sweeping and intimate, from the Booker Prize–winning author of Possession, that spans the Victorian era through the World War I years, and centers around a famous children’s book author and the passions, betrayals, and secrets that tear apart the people she loves.

When Olive Wellwood’s oldest son discovers a runaway named Philip sketching in the basement of the new Victoria and Albert Museum—a talented working-class boy who could be a character out of one of Olive’s magical tales—she takes him into the storybook world of her family and friends.

But the joyful bacchanals Olive hosts at her rambling country house—and the separate, private books she writes for each of her seven children—conceal more treachery and darkness than Philip has ever imagined. As these lives—of adults and children alike—unfold, lies are revealed, hearts are broken, and the damaging truth about the Wellwoods slowly emerges. But their personal struggles, their hidden desires, will soon be eclipsed by far greater forces, as the tides turn across Europe and a golden era comes to an end.

Taking us from the cliff-lined shores of England to Paris, Munich, and the trenches of the Somme, The Children’s Book is a deeply affecting story of a singular family, played out against the great, rippling tides of the day. It is a masterly literary achievement by one of our most essential writers.

Vanish (Jane Rizzoli, Book 5) Overviews

A blessed event becomes a nightmare for pregnant homicide detective Jane Rizzoli when she finds herself on the wrong side of a hostage crisis in this timely and relentless new thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of Body Double.

A nameless, beautiful woman appears to be just another corpse in the morgue. An apparent suicide, she lies on a gurney, awaiting the dissecting scalpel of medical examiner Maura Isles. But when Maura unzips the body bag and looks down at the body, she gets the fright of her life. The corpse opens its eyes.

Very much alive, the woman is rushed to the hospital, where with shockingly cool precision, she murders a security guard and seizes hostages . . . one of them a pregnant patient, Jane Rizzoli.

Who is this violent, desperate soul, and what does she want? As the tense hours tick by, Maura joins forces with Jane’s husband, FBI agent Gabriel Dean, to track down the mysterious killer’s identity. When federal agents suddenly appear on the scene, Maura and Gabriel realize that they are dealing with a case that goes far deeper than just an ordinary hostage crisis.

Only Jane, trapped with the armed madwoman, holds the key to the mystery. And only she can solve it–if she survives the night.

Vanish (Jane Rizzoli, Book 5) RelateItems

Vanish (Jane Rizzoli, Book 5) CustomerReview

I tend to read Tess Gerritsen books when I feel a reading slump coming on. They're just the perfect books to curb them since they're quick books that have you turning pages at an alarming speed. Anyway, that's why I picked up Vanish. I've been in final project hell and needed something that I would get into right away. While Vanish wasn't my favorite in the Rizzoli and Isles series, it definitely didn't disappoint.

Vanish doesn't so much start off with a bang, but rather a creepy and effective beginning. Mila's story was heartbreaking and enthralling that I found myself wanting the Rizzoli and Isles parts to be over faster just so I can get back to her story. However, the middle was where I started having some issues. I felt that it lagged just a bit with the whole "Jane is a hostage" situation. It wasn't as heart-pounding as I thought it would be. Also, I felt that it was veering towards political thriller territory and that just isn't my cup of tea.

Soon afterwards, my fears were quenched and Vanish went right back to the heart-pounding thriller that I expected it to be with a satisfying ending for some and heartbreaking endings/beginings for others. While there were a few bumps in the road, I enjoyed Vanish immensely.

I also found that I'm not getting sick of the leads. Usually after I've read more than a few in a series, I find that there are certain things that are starting to bother me about the main characters. Just little quirks that are starting to become more apparent after so much time together. This hasn't happened with the Rizzoli and Isles series yet. It's quite the opposite actually. An example of this is when I read the plot for the upcoming book (I believe it's the 8th in the series) and my heart hurt just a little at the thought of what's coming up for Maura. Hopefully, it won't end the way I think it will and there will be another worthy plot twist that won't have me in tears.

Anyway, not only did Vanish curb said reading slump, but it got me that much more excited for the upcoming Rizzoli & Isles series on TNT. So much that I'm now counting down the days until July 12th. So even if Book 8 ends up the way I hope it won't, I'll still have the series there. Unless of course, the people at TNT (I'm not calling the idiots...yet) cancel the show before it's time and then I'll go back to the books and realized they sucked and the show was better...I doubt this will happen. It's not like Tess Gerritsen is James Patterson and the Rizzoli & Isles series is the Women's Murder Club...

The Little SAS Book: A Primer, Fourth Edition Overviews

Now in its fourth edition, The Little SAS Book is a classic, helping many people learn SAS programming. The book's friendly, easy-to-read style gently introduces readers to the most commonly used features of the SAS language. Topics include basic SAS concepts such as the DATA and PROC steps, inputting data, modifying and combining data sets, summarizing data, producing reports, and debugging SAS programs. Each topic is presented in a self-contained two-page layout complete with examples and graphics. This clear and concise format enables new users to get up and running quickly, while the examples allow readers to type in the program and see it work!

New topics in the fourth edition include ODS Graphics for statistical procedures, PROC SGPLOT for graphics, creating new variables in PROC REPORT with a COMPUTE block, WHERE= data set option, SORTSEQ=LINGUISTIC option in PROC SORT, and more functions, including ANYALPHA, CAT, PROPCASE, and YRDIF.

The Little SAS Book: A Primer, Fourth Edition CustomerReview

The Little SAS Book has received a small number of very negative reviews, and, as one of the authors, I just want to say to those people that I'm very sorry they were so disappointed. Let me be the first to admit that no book--including The Little SAS Book--can meet the needs of every reader.

As for the accusation that the book is informal in tone, I can only say, "Guilty!" The title of this book makes it clear that it is intended to be informal, friendly, and accessible.

Another reviewer states, "If you have experience in either programming or SAS you will outgrow this book in a couple days." I'm sorry you feel that way, but I can attest that not everyone shares your view. SAS programmers with decades of experience have told me that they used this book to review before taking the SAS certification base exam. One of the greatest compliments I have ever received was from a developer at SAS Institute who told me that he uses our book when he writes SAS programs!

But this is anecdotal evidence. For people who prefer hard facts, here are some points to consider: This book is so well respected that for many years a copy of the book was shipped with every copy of SAS software. That stopped only because SAS software is now delivered via the Internet. In addition, this book has won international awards. The Little SAS Book: A Primer, Fourth Edition received the Award of Excellence from the Society for Technical Communications in its International Technical Publications Competition for 2009.

If you are the kind of person who prefers a more formal style, then please don't buy this book. There are many other sources of information about SAS software. These include the SAS Help and Documentation provided with the software, extensive help on SAS Institute's customer support web site, and many wonderful conference papers. The best source for conference papers is a site owned by Lex Jansen. I am not allowed to include links in this review, but you shouldn't have any trouble finding these web sites.

I wish you the best of luck in all your endeavors. Happy SAS-ing!

2005 Finalist for the Association of Educational Publishers’ Distinguished Achievement Award, this workbook gives children the opportunity to practice using scissors accurately. Many children have difficulty cutting exactly on the lines, so this workbook has children begin cutting on thick lines before moving gradually to thinner ones. Children will eventually be comfortable cutting straight lines, curves, and circles, and the practice will help develop their manual dexterity.

My daughter is 4 and just finished this book. She LOVED it would try to get out of meals early so she could go cut! She was slow to start but all of a sudden it "clicked" for her and I am so proud that she made it look easy towards the end. Maybe she has my art teacher gene!? I am hoping! My only complaint is that it is easier for the child to cut once the page is separate from the book and there are no perforated edges to tear the individual pages out. I had to basically break the binding to get the pages out and getting them out without tearing into the content of the page seemed challenging for me! Why don't they have perforated pages?? Other than that, the book gets an A+.

The Digital Photography Book, Volume 3 Overviews

Scott Kelby, author of The Digital Photography Book, volume 1 (the world’s best-selling digital photography book of all time), is back with a follow-up to his volume 2 smash best seller, with an entirely new book that picks up right where he left off. It’s even more of that “Ah ha—so that’s how they do it,” straight-to-the-point, skip-the-techno-jargon stuff you can really use today to make your shots even better.

This book truly has a brilliant premise, and here’s how Scott describes it: “If you and I were out on a shoot and you asked me, ‘Hey Scott, I want the light for this portrait to look really soft and flattering. How far back should I put this softbox?’ I wouldn’t give you a lecture about lighting ratios, or flash modifiers. In real life, I’d just turn to you and say, ‘Move it in as close to your subject as you possibly can, without it actually showing up in the shot.’ Well, that’s what this book is all about: you and I out shooting where I answer questions, give you advice, and share the secrets I’ve learned, just like I would with a friend—without all the technical explanations and techie photo speak.”

Each page covers a single concept on how to make your photography better. Every time you turn the page, you’ll learn another pro setting, tool, or trick to transform your work from snapshots into gallery prints. If you’re tired of taking shots that look “okay,” and if you’re tired of looking in photography magazines and thinking, “Why don’t my shots look like that?” then this is the book for you.

This isn’t a book of theory—full of confusing jargon and detailed concepts. This is a book on which button to push, which setting to use, and when to use it. With nearly 200 more of the most closely guarded photographic “tricks of the trade,” this book gets you shooting dramatically better-looking, sharper, more colorful, more professional-looking photos every time.

The Digital Photography Book, Volume 3 RelateItems

The Digital Photography Book, Volume 3 CustomerReview

Like the Volume 2, Volume 3 builds of the other books as opposed to being a 3rd edition. This seems to be Scott Kelby's little scheme to get people to buy three books instead of just one. Kelby continues his same tell it like it is writing/teaching style in this volume. Each page of the book covers a different topic and contains a tip to improve your photography.

My only disappointment with this book was that it seemed to repeat some of the material from the first book. Overall The Digital Photography Book, Volume 3 is a good book and you will learn several new tricks. If you enjoyed Scott Kelby's other books you will enjoy this book.

It Happened One Autumn (The Wallflowers, Book 2) Overviews

It happened at the ball . . .

Where beautiful but bold Lillian Bowman quickly learned that her independent American ways weren't entirely "the thing." And the most disapproving of all was insufferable, snobbish, and impossible Marcus, Lord Westcliff, London's most eligible aristocrat.

It happened in the garden . . .

When Marcus shockingly—and dangerously–swept her into his arms. Lillian was overcome with a consuming passion for a man she didn't even like. Time stood still; it was as if no one else existed . . . thank goodness they weren't caught very nearly in the act!

It happened one autumn . . .

Marcus was a man in charge of his own emotions, a bedrock of stability. But with Lillian, every touch was exquisite torture, every kiss an enticement for more. Yet how could he consider taking a woman so blatantly unsuitable . . . as his bride?

It Happened One Autumn (The Wallflowers, Book 2) RelateItems

It Happened One Autumn (The Wallflowers, Book 2) CustomerReview

Fairly satisfying. I know that after reading the first book in this series, Secrets of a Summer Night, I really looked forward to reading Westcliff and Lillian's love story. Happily I was not disapointed.

Lillian is one of four girls who call themselves wallflowers, ladies who are consistantly ignored at balls and parties. These friends have banded together to find each other husbands. Now that the first wallflower, Annabel, is happily married, attention turns to Lillian. Along with her younger sister, Lillian is an heiress to an enormous fortune--however, she is an American lacking crucial ties to nobility. She's irreverent, ill-manered, and opinionated, she is the last woman that Marcus Westcliff would consider for a wife. He's an earl possessing a very old and prestigious title, and he's grown up under parents who are demanding and bordering on abusive. As a result, he's overly self-assured, stubborn, and commanding.

The romance is very good. I love the opposites attract thing. I enjoyed Lillian as a character--she is someone a modern woman can relate to. Westcliff unfortunately comes off as a bit generic, but I believe this is mostly because the author chooses to focus more on Lillian and her conflictedness. Also, this one was somewhat lacking in actual action--it's mostly dialogue based. Still, it is definately a well recommended book--thorough plot, rich setting, and wonderful characters.

I am very pleased with the Adobe InDesign Classroom in a Book. Until I used this book (and the Illustrator Classroom in a Book), learning Adobe CS4 seemed overwhelming and I was afraid it would take me forever to figure it out on my own. Now, I look forward to each new lesson. Classroom in a Book breaks learning InDesign into small, easy-to-digest, bites and the lessons are fun, interesting, and instantly inspire me to apply the techniques to my own work. I think this inspiration factor is why I like this series so much better than the other tutorial books I've purchased. Perhaps it has something to do with the kind of work I do, which involves technical report writing. By the way, I haven't found anything wrong with this book, contrary to what some of the other reviewers have said--I'm glad I didn't listen to them.

Dilbert, the benchmark of office humors, continues to use its considerable powers of humor for the greater good, helping us to fight the good fight at work despite those around us whose job descriptions seem to include undercutting morale and generally doing everything possible to lead us into economic ruin.

Of course this can work with any book you read out loud during pregnancy but this one is fun with it's silly words and of course it's Dr. Seuss. We read it out loud during my 1st pregnancy and when my daughter was born she recognized my husband's voice right away and stopped crying. I've bought this for a bunch of my friends for their 1st pregnancies.

The Book of Luke Overviews

From the bestselling author of Plan B comes a funny and touching new novel about a girl, a boy, and a notebook that could ruin everything.

Emily Abbott has always been considered the Girl Most Likely to Be Nice -- but lately being nice hasn't done her any good. Her parents have decided to move the family from Chicago back to their hometown of Boston in the middle of Emily's senior year. Only Emily's first real boyfriend, Sean, is in Chicago, and so is her shot at class valedictorian and early admission to the Ivy League. What's a nice girl to do?

Then Sean dumps Emily on moving day and her father announces he's staying behind in Chicago "to tie up loose ends," and Emily decides that what a nice girl needs to do is to stop being nice.

She reconnects with her best friends in Boston, Josie and Lucy, only to discover that they too have been on the receiving end of some glaring Guy Don'ts. So when the girls have to come up with something to put in the senior class time capsule, they know exactly what to do. They'll create a not-so-nice reference guide for future generations of guys -- an instruction book that teaches them the right way to treat girls.

But when her friends draft Emily to test out their tips on Luke Preston -- the hottest, most popular guy in school, who just broke up with Josie by email -- Emily soon finds that Luke is the trickiest of test subjects . . . and that even a nice girl like Emily has a few things to learn about love.

The Book of Luke CustomerReview

I put off buying this book for so long, when I finally bought it and read it, I wonder how I let myself do so! Emily is a character that all girls can relate to. Her boyfriend breaks up with her, she struggles moving back to her hometown without her father. The only thing girls would not dare to do that Emily has done, is create a guy's guide... to Luke.

Jenny O'Connell makes the character of Emily and Luke so appealing that you can't help but root for the two even through all of their stupid mistakes. The Book of Luke is a sweet, flirty read for teenagers. You can't help but smile at some of the things Luke does!

The only reasons I gave the book 4 stars out of 5 is the fact that this book was in need of a better editor. The graduating year changes about 3 times in the story, once being in the 1000's rather than 2000's. The other reason was the the ending could have been better, but I won't complain about that. Otherwise, the book would have gotten 5 stars from me!

ChefMD's Big Book of Culinary Medicine: A Food Lover's Road Map to Losing Weight, Preventing Disease, and Getting Really Healthy Overviews

What Dr. Andrew Weil is to herbal medicine and Dr. Phil is to TV psychology, Dr. John La Puma is to culinary medicine. At thirty-five, after eating too much of the Standard American Diet (SAD, isn’t it?), Dr. La Puma had become SADly paunchy. So he decided to research the science of nutrition while also going to culinary school to learn to cook. He created the revolutionary new concept of “culinary medicine”–recipes, foods, and meals that prevent or control common health conditions without sacrificing restaurant-quality taste.

Now you can use culinary medicine too. In ChefMD’s Big Book of Culinary Medicine, you’ll learn to stock the medicine chest in your kitchen, use the doctor inside of you, and create dishes that give you lifesaving benefits and truly dazzling flavor.

Dr. La Puma serves up a step-by-step eight-week plan to motivate you and help you change your life. Try Saffron Scallop, Shrimp, and Chickpea Paella. Or Sicilian Pasta with Swiss Chard, Goat Cheese, and Basil. Or Spicy and Rich Sausage and Kidney Bean Chili.

The Chef's MD Big Book of Culinary Medicine is a very interesting book for anyone that whats to improve their health. The book was so inspiring that I have decided to start a garden to help our family to eat healthier without the toxins that are in many of the produce that is boughten in the the grocery stores today. Perhaps this is why so many people develop cancer.
When I read about the book on the internet I purchased two of the, one for myself and the other for my mother. My mom could not say enough about the book, she also loved the book.

Blue Book of Gun Values: 31st Edition CustomerReview

Just went to a gunshow this weekend. This is what the dealers were using for putting a value to buying and selling guns. Great resource for finding out the value of your firearm. Well worth the investment. Saw one guy who thought his pistol was only worth 0...turned out to be worth ,200. Would have been taken advantage of if another (more honest) dealer hadn't showed him the value. Although it does seem to price military firearms a bit low, that would likely be more due to the ever-increasing market value of those types of firearms and the demand of collectors. Otherwise, great resource. Does a really great job of identifying obscure, not well-known firearm manufactures. Neat little bios for each item listed which makes interesting reading.
