PREFACE.

To uphold the "right of private judgment," and our "Christian liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free;" to add fuel to the fire of investigation, and in the crucible of deep inquiry, melt from the gold of pure religion, the dross of man's invention; to appeal from the erring tribunals of a fallible Priesthood, and restore to its original state the mutilated Testament of the Saviour; also to induce all earnest thinkers to search not a part, but the whole of the Scriptures, if therein they think they will find eternal life; I, as an advocate of free thought and untrammelled opinion, dispute the authority of those uncharitable, bickering, and ignorant Ecclesiastics who first suppressed these gospels and epistles; and I join issue with their Catholic and Protestant successors who have since excluded them from the New Testament, of which they formed a part; and were venerated by the Primitive Churches, during the first four hundred years of the Christian Era.
My opposition is based on two grounds; first, the right of every rational being to become a "Priest unto himself," and by the test of enlightened reason, to form his own unbiased judgment of all things natural and spiritual: second, that the reputation of the Bishops who extracted these books from the original New Testament, under the pretence of being Apocryphal, and forbade them to be read by the people, is proved by authentic impartial history too odious to entitle them to any deference. Since the Nicene Council, by a pious fraud, which I shall further allude to, suppressed these books, several of them have been reissued from time to time by various translators, who differed considerably in their versions, as the historical references attached to them in the following pages will demonstrate. But to the late Mr. William Hone we are indebted for their complete publication for the first time in one volume, about the year 1820; which edition, diligently revised, and purified of many errors both in the text and the notes attached thereto, I have re-published in numbers to enable all classes of the nation to purchase and peruse them. As, however, instead of being called by their own designation "Apocryphal," (which yet remains to be proved), they were re-entitled THE FORBIDDEN BOOKS, and, from communications received, appear to have agitated a portion of the great mass of ignorant bigotry which mars the fair form of Religion in these sect-ridden dominions, I have modified the title to its present shape with the hope that in spite of illiberal clerical influence, my fellow Christians will read and inwardly digest the sublime precepts they inculcate;—as pure, as holy, and as charitable as those principles of Christianity taught in the Scriptures they; now read by permission; although their minds may, after mature reflection, doubt the truth of the miraculous records therein given.
To ensure these Gospels and Epistles an unprejudiced and serious attention, which they are entitled to, equally with those now patronised by Church authority, I will briefly refer to that disgraceful epoch in Roman Ecclesiastical Annals, when the New Testament was mutilated, and priestly craft was employed for excluding these books from its pages. HONE, in the preface to his first edition of the Apocryphal New Testament, so called, without satisfactory grounds, by the Council of Nice, in the reign of the Emperor Constantine, thus opens the subject:—

When I bought Mixed Bags, I paid absolutely nothing for it. Seeing that it was free for a limited time, I quickly welcomed it into my collection, not even bothering to read the book's description (Mostly because I felt that the offer would vanish right before my eyes, and I didn't want to waste any time reading said description. Did I mention it was FREE?!) Anywho, my feelings for this book are mixed. Sure, it was a good, quick read (And by "quick," I mean that you could finish it within a few hours.), but it wasn't exactly one to stand out either. To me, it was just an "okay" book, not very different from any other teen chick-lit book out there, with non-popular DJ battling popular mean-girl Taylor for the love of supposedly "cute" Conner. I guess the main thing about the book that irked me was that Conner told DJ early in the book that he liked her just the way she was, but then she IGNORED him anyway, changing her looks and interests to fit in better with her "prettier" roomates. And then she wondered why Conner was no longer interested in her. However, even though the main character aggravates me, I do think that the book holds a good message. It's definately one of those books that makes you wonder whether you're being the person you want to be, or the person others want you be. When I bought the book, I had no idea that it had a Christian theme to it. In fact, I didn't know that there was a Christian theme to it until the end of the book (Personally, I thought that the whole scene where DJ gave herself to God came out of nowhere, but I loved it just the same and thought that it was the perfect way to end the book. To make a not-so-long-story even shorter, I was pleasantly surprised with the ending.). I loved the message though. It really got me thinking about my own relationship with God. All in all, I thought Mixed Bags was a good book though, had it not been free, I probably wouldn't have bought it, being that it was so short (I just don't see a point in paying around .00 for something that I'll finish within a day.). But if you're looking for a short read with a good message, then this is the book for you. This is Kindle Obsession, signing off.

I selected this book because I was reading a book by the Pleiadians & the books was talking about the story of two brothers Enki & Enlil. I have never read Zecharia books, but I was familiar with his work. I didn't know what to expect from the reading, but I most say it was well worth my time.

No, not by talking to the tiger - you'll just get eaten up. No, not by soaking in the river - you'll get eaten up by crocodiles. Maybe hiding is the answer? Nope, you'll get eaten up by lions. (Luckily, at this point there's a bit of a deus ex elephanta and he's saved and discovers his true identity all in one fell blow.)

I bought this book recently and I love it. I think this would be a great supplement to a General Biology course, but is too detailed for regular use in a high school biology course, with the exception of AP. I think it is a little too detailed for a high school bio class, although it covers everything that I was introduced to in my Bio 110 course.

A slight caution--many people may see the title and bright cover thinking this would be a 'fun' way to learn or a great 'fun' gift to someone interested in science. In reality, it's set up like a textbook. It's meant to be a serious aide to someone learning biology. In that sense, it's a great tool, but this isn't like the coloring books we used as kids! So don't be misled.

For those of you looking for a supplement to a high school class, perhaps the "Biology Coloring WORKBOOK" would be a better choice.

Let me start off by saying that I am a fervent cookbook collector AND a very active home cook/ baker. I have made many of the recipes in this book and they've all gotten raves. I was even able to substitute a bit in such ways as using soy cream instead of dairy cream, and the recipes still work!
The book doesn't have pictures, which I know annoys some, but I actually prefer it that way because that way there's more room for recipes. I also enjoy the "theme and variations" format because I'm always on the lookout for nifty ways to change up a recipe. I know some people are complaining about the variations because they're often simple, but personally I think it's nice to be reminded of all the small, subtle ways we can change recipes and create amazing flavor combinations.

At Sierra Mercy Hospital, the patients are not the only ones in need of healing.

Sounds like the lead-in for a television medical drama, doesn't it? I think that is what attracted me to Candace Calvert's novel Critical Care. I am a big fan of medical drama. It started with my parents--I can remember watching Trapper John, M.D. with Mom and Dad when I was a kid. The one must-see show for me now is Grey's Anatomy. The one drawback to that show, is the immoral behavior of the entire hospital staff. If hospitals are really run like the ones on TV.... WOW! I can't even imagine.

Sierra Mercy Hospital is a bit different. Sure, there are still romances among the staff members. In this book, the romance is based on mutual respect and shared experiences, rather than solely on physical attraction.

Calvert uses her extensive medical knowledge and years of health care experience to create believable characters, interacting in a realistic setting.

After a deadly explosion at a daycare center, the emergency room staff at Sierra Mercy find themselves in need of help. Not all of them are willing to admit to that need, though, let alone ask for it. That puts Claire Avery, the nurse educator assigned to provide stress counseling in the ER, and Dr. Logan Caldwell, the head of the emergency department, at odds. She is still dealing with a trauma from her own past, while he operates on the belief that problems need to be left outside the hospital.

I was captivated with this book from the first page. Though it was not on my official "must review" list, I couldn't put it down. Critical Care is the first Candace Calvert novel that I have read, but it will definitely not be the last.

In the late 19th century, historian, scholar, and anthropologist, Andrew Lang, began publishing collections of fairy tales from around the world. The first volume was `The Blue Fairy Book' published in 1887. Lang was not a true ethnologist, like the German Brothers Grimm. He was far more the `translator' than collector of tales from the source, stories transcribed from being told by people to whom the tales were passed down by word of mouth. In fact, many stories in his first volume, such as Rumpelstiltskin; Snow White; Sleeping Beauty; Cinderella; and Hansel and Gretel were translated from Grimm's books of fairy tales. Some of his `fairy tales' were even `copied from relatively recent fantasy fiction, such as A Voyage to Lilliput, the first of the four episodes in Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels.
My inspiration for commenting Lang's series of fairy tale books is for the sheer quantity of tales, the wonderful woodcut illustrations, some few of which may have become almost as popular as the tales (although not quite in the same league as Sir John Tenniel's illustrations for Lewis Carroll's great fantasies), and the fact that I had these when I was young.
With twelve of these books, with between 30 and 36 stories in each book, this gives one about 400 different stories. If I were to recommend anything as standard equipment at a grandparents' house, it would be a complete set of these books.
Needless to say, there are a few `warnings' to accompany books assembled over 100 years ago. You will encounter a fair number of words with which even an adult may be unfamiliar, let alone a five year old. For example, on the second page of The Princess Mayblossom in The Red Fairy Book, a character puts sulfur in a witch's porridge. This requires at least three explanations. What is sulfur, what is porridge, and why is sulfur in porridge such a bad thing. More difficult still is when a prince entered the town on a white horse which `pranced and caracoled to the sound of the trumpets'. In 19th century London, caracoling (making half turns to the right and the left) was probably as common and as well known as `stepping on the gas' is today. But, if you're a grandparent, that's half the fun, explaining new words and ideas to the young-uns.
There is another `danger' which may require just a bit more explanation, although in today's world of crime dramas on TV, I'm not sure that most kids are already totally immune to being shocked by death and dead bodies. In these stories, lots of people and creatures get killed in very unpleasant ways, and lots of very good people and creatures suffer in very unpleasant ways. It's ironic that the critics in Lang's own time felt the stories were 'unreality, brutality, and escapism to be harmful for young readers, while holding that such stories were beneath the serious consideration of those of mature age'. The success of a whole library of Walt Disney feature length cartoons based on these stories is a testament to how well they work with children. But do be warned, Uncle Walt did clean things up a bit. Lang's versions hold back on very little that was ugly and unpleasant in some of these stories.
The down side to the great quantity of stories is that even when some come from very different parts of the world, there is a remarkable amount of overlap in theme, plot, and characters. But by the time you get to another story of a beautiful young girl mistreated by a stepmother, it will have been several month since you read Cinderella or the Little Glass Slipper in The Blue Fairy Book. The other side of the coin is that you can play the game of trying to recall what that other story was with a similar theme.
There is one very big word of caution about buying these books through Amazon or a similar on line outlet. I stopped counting when I got to twelve different editions of The Blue Fairy Book, or a volume including several of these books. Not all of these editions have the original woodcuts and even worse, not all have a table of contents and introduction. The one publisher which has all twelve volumes is by Dover. Other publishers, such as Flying Chipmunk Publishing (yes, that's it's name) also have all the original illustrations, table of contents, and introduction, but I'm not certain that publisher has all twelve volumes. Dover most certainly does, as I just bought all twelve of them from Amazon.
While I suspect these stories may have been `old hat' for quite some time, it may be that with the popularity of Lord of the Rings, the Narnia stories, and the Harry Potter stories, all of which have their share of suffering and death, that these may be in for a revival. Again, the main attraction is that for relatively little money and space, Grammy and Grandad get a great resource for bonding with children.

Goodnight Moon Specifications

Perhaps the perfect children's bedtime book, Goodnight Moon is a short poem of goodnight wishes from a young rabbit preparing for--or attempting to postpone--his own slumber. He says goodnight to every object in sight and within earshot, including the "quiet old lady whispering hush." Clement Hurd's illustrations are simple and effective, alternating between small ink drawings and wide, brightly colored views of the little rabbit's room.

Finding all of the items mentioned throughout the book within the pictures is a good bedtime activity--a reappearing little mouse is particularly pesky. By the end of the little rabbit's goodnight poem, the story has quieted to a whisper, and the drawings have darkened with nightfall. As you turn the last page, you can expect a sleepy smile and at least a yawn or two. (Picture book)

Upon receiving this book I initially wrote a bad review of it, as the illustrations have a lot to be desired, but after reading it to my son I think it's only fair that I change my feedback. My son just adores this book, and since this book is for him and not me I know he'd give it rave reviews.

A darker book than any in the series thus far with a level of sophistication belying its genre, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince moves the series into murkier waters and marks the arrival of Rowling onto the adult literary scene. While she has long been praised for her cleverness and wit, the strength of Book 6 lies in her subtle development of key characters, as well as her carefully nuanced depiction of a community at war. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, no one and nothing is safe, including preconceived notions of good and evil and of right and wrong. With each book in her increasingly remarkable series, fans have nervously watched J.K. Rowling raise the stakes; gone are the simple delights of butterbeer and enchanted candy, and days when the worst ailment could be cured by a bite of chocolate. A series that began as a colorful lark full of magic and discovery has become a dark and deadly war zone. But this should not come as a shock to loyal readers. Keep in mind that this list is by no means exhaustive (what we love about Harry could fill ten books!) and does not include any of the spectacular revelatory moments that would spoil the books for those (few) who have not read them. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

* Harry's first trip to the zoo with the Dursleys, when a boa constrictor winks at him. * When the Dursleys' house is suddenly besieged by letters for Harry from Hogwarts. Readers learn how much the Dursleys have been keeping from Harry. Rowling does a wonderful job in displaying the lengths to which Uncle Vernon will go to deny that magic exists. * Harry's first visit to Diagon Alley with Hagrid. Full of curiosities and rich with magic and marvel, Harry's first trip includes a trip to Gringotts and Ollivanders, where Harry gets his wand (holly and phoenix feather) and discovers yet another connection to He-Who-Must-No-Be-Named. This moment is the reader's first full introduction to Rowling's world of witchcraft and wizards. * Harry's experience with the Sorting Hat.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

* The de-gnoming of the Weasleys' garden. Harry discovers that even wizards have chores--gnomes must be grabbed (ignoring angry protests "Gerroff me! Gerroff me!"), swung about (to make them too dizzy to come back), and tossed out of the garden--this delightful scene highlights Rowling's clever and witty genius. * Harry's first experience with a Howler, sent to Ron by his mother. * The Dueling Club battle between Harry and Malfoy. Gilderoy Lockhart starts the Dueling Club to help students practice spells on each other, but he is not prepared for the intensity of the animosity between Harry and Draco. Since they are still young, their minibattle is innocent enough, including tickling and dancing charms.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

* Ron's attempt to use a telephone to call Harry at the Dursleys'. * Harry's first encounter with a Dementor on the train (and just about any other encounter with Dementors). Harry's brush with the Dementors is terrifying and prepares Potter fans for a darker, scarier book. * Harry, Ron, and Hermione's behavior in Professor Trelawney's Divination class. Some of the best moments in Rowling's books occur when she reminds us that the wizards-in-training at Hogwarts are, after all, just children. Clearly, even at a school of witchcraft and wizardry, classes can be boring and seem pointless to children. * The Boggart lesson in Professor Lupin's classroom. * Harry, Ron, and Hermione's knock-down confrontation with Snape.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

* Hermione's disgust at the reception for the veela (Bulgarian National Team Mascots) at the Quidditch World Cup. Rowling's fourth book addresses issues about growing up--the dynamic between the boys and girls at Hogwarts starts to change. Nowhere is this more plain than the hilarious scene in which magical cheerleaders nearly convince Harry and Ron to jump from the stands to impress them. * Viktor Krum's crush on Hermione--and Ron's objection to it. * Malfoy's "Potter Stinks" badge. * Hermione's creation of S.P.E.W., the intolerant bigotry of the Death Eaters, and the danger of the Triwizard Tournament. Add in the changing dynamics between girls and boys at Hogwarts, and suddenly Rowling's fourth book has a weight and seriousness not as present in early books in the series. Candy and tickle spells are left behind as the students tackle darker, more serious issues and take on larger responsibilities, including the knowledge of illegal curses.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

* Harry's outburst to his friends at No. 12 Grimmauld Place. A combination of frustration over being kept in the dark and fear that he will be expelled fuels much of Harry's anger, and it all comes out at once, directly aimed at Ron and Hermione. Rowling perfectly portrays Harry's frustration at being too old to shirk responsibility, but too young to be accepted as part of the fight that he knows is coming. * Harry's detention with Professor Umbridge. Rowling shows her darker side, leading readers to believe that Hogwarts is no longer a safe haven for young wizards. Dolores represents a bureaucratic tyrant capable of real evil, and Harry is forced to endure their private battle of wills alone. * Harry and Cho's painfully awkward interactions. Rowling clearly remembers what it was like to be a teenager. * Harry's Occlumency lessons with Snape. * Dumbledore's confession to Harry.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Book 6) CustomerReview

This book was a fun (albeit dark) read. It is a fitting transition from the teenage angst of Book 5 to the culmination of the series in Book 7. Harry and the other characters live in a magical world full of turmoil, with Death Eaters gaining power and striking fear into the hearts of witches and wizards the world over. While this is going on, the main characters are still at Hogwarts, studying upper-level magical skills, and maturing as people. Dumbledore arms Harry with some knowledge about Lord Voldemort that he will need in the inevitable battle, and the story ends with a flurry of twists and turns that leave the reader wanting to move right into the next book to see how the saga ends.
