Everyday childhood activities, such as an excursion to the park, splashing in the bathtub, or fixing a snack in the kitchen, can excite many questions in young children. Why is the sky blue? Why does my stomach g-r-r-owl? Why do cows moo? Curious kids want to know, and no adult has all the answers. The tenth anniversary edition of Why? provides child-friendly explanations for nearly 100 of these everyday mysteries for a whole new generation of children. Why? takes young readers inside the kitchen and out to the park, from the farm to the supermarket, and from bathtime to bedtime. I bought this when my 3-year started asking me questions like:
- Why do we need to go to the bathroom all the time?
- Where does the water go when you flush it?
- Why does the outside of the icecream cup get wet?
- Why does it rain?

These questions would have me scurrying to the encyclopedia but it was hard to get creative enough and explain the terms to a toddler. So I looked this book. While not exhaustive, it does give extremely palatable answers without fudging with truth/science. And the questions in the book help you to formulate your own for others. I highly recommend it as a starting why/how book.

Friday Night Bites (Chicagoland Vampires, Book 2) Overviews

The story of a young heiress's initiation into the dark society of the Chicagoland Vampires continues...

Ten months after vampires revealed their existence to the mortals of Chicago, they're enjoying a celebrity status usually reserved for the Hollywood elite. But should people learn about the Raves-mass feeding parties where vampires round up humans like cattle-the citizens will start sharpening their stakes.

So now it's up to the new vampire Merit to reconnect with her upper class family and act as liaison between humans and bloodsuckers, and keep the more unsavory aspects of the vampire lifestyle out of the media. But someone doesn't want peace between them-someone with an ancient grudge...

Friday Night Bites (Chicagoland Vampires, Book 2) CustomerReview

The Plot:
The second Chicagoland Vampires book brings the awkward relationship between Merit and Ethan to a head. Now that the evil leader of Navarre House, Celina Desaulniers, has been dethroned and replaced by Merit's on-again-off-again beau, Morgan, political unrest begins to spread from the vampires to the rest of the supernatural world and beyond.

When the paparazzi set up shop outside Cadogan House to try to get the scoop on anything and everything supe, Merit is forced to rekindle old relationships from her human past. And Ethan is more than happy to use Merit's social clout to their political advantage, even if it means that they are forced to spend some Friday nights together.

Zelda's Take:
Book 2 and I am still loving this series -- so much that I am becoming distressed at the fact that there are only three books in it so far and I'm almost finished with them! There's just something about the series that gets me all excited and dreamy.

It could possibly be the tension between Merit and Ethan, which I adore. I love how Ethan seems so calculating and tries to use his authority over Merit to force her to spend more time with him under the guise of it being "required work" -- yet he still rebukes her in his internal struggle with his own feelings. I love how Merit seems to know exactly what Ethan is up to and hates it, yet she still can't resist him. She remains loyal to her oath above all else, despite the fact that she is subconsiously sabotaging her relationship with Morgan. This, and the heat between the two of them is palpable. When Ethan's eyes silver over and he starts to open up to Merit... I just can't help but get all giggly

This is a book full of build-ups and breakdowns. From the build-up of the relationship between Merit and Ethan, to the build-up of the discord between Merit and Mallory and the eventual breakdown of their friendship, to the build-up and breakdown of Merit's broken vampire problem... although I was glad to finally see resolution between Merit and her vampire. It was painful to see her struggle to keep control over both of her sides, and to keep it hidden from the world. And, that the resolution was brought about by her kicking Ethan's ass and then concluded with the most intimate interaction between Ethan and Merit yet... just left me begging for more.

I must say, though, that I can't handle too much more tension, sexual or otherwise, here, so I am hopeful to see more resolution, particularly in the form of one Master vampire and his Sentinel getting it on, in Book 3 of the series...

Artemis Fowl: The Lost Colony (Book 5) Overviews

Demons are beginning to materialize without warning on Earth.  If humans were to capture one, all fairies would be exposed. In order to protect themselves, the fairies must decipher complicated equations to determine where the next demon will appear.  Not even the brilliant Foaly can make heads or tails of the formulas – but he knows someone who can: Artemis Fowl.

When a very confused demon imp appears in a Sicilian theater, Artemis is there to meet him.  But he is not alone.  Someone else has unlocked the secrets of the fairy world…and she is only twelve years old. Now, in a race against time, a newly-reformed Artemis Fowl will have to dip into his bag of dirty tricks if he is to save his fairy friends from his latest nemesis, not to mention a power hungry demon warlord who is poised to invade our dimension with his savage army.

Artemis Fowl: The Lost Colony (Book 5) CustomerReview

Throughout the series, Artemis, a criminal mastermind teen, has been learning to be a good guy. In this book, that transformation is pretty much complete. Former LEP Captain Holly Short is called back into service in Foaly's new (and very well-funded) post in the secretive Section Eight. Demons, the Eighth Family of the Fairy People, have begun appearing on Earth, and Artemis Fowl seems to be able to predict when and where. But someone else, another genius child named Minerva Paradizo, has figured it out, too, and manages to capture a small imp named No. 1. Artemis agrees to help Holly and the Fairies rescue the imp before more humans find out about him and start searching for more -- which might lead them to the Fairy underground
As the series evolves, Artemis has lost the last traces of his criminal bent, almost becoming the millennial version of a boy scout. He and the Fairies are now solidly on the same side and good friends. Even the violence has been dialed back a bit. With his brilliance, technology, family organization, and world-spanning adventuring, Artemis has become a sort of Tom Swift for the 21st century.

Five books into the series the relationships and motivations are getting more complex, so it is best to start with the first book. Author Eoin Colfer seems to like putting Artemis up against other geniuses but Minerva, who doesn't really mean any harm, is no Opal Koboi (for the uninitiated, she's the maniacal villain from books 2 and 4). So with THE LOST COLONY the series returns to the pleasure of seeing Artemis, always in charge and unflappable, work out his complicated plans; he's not off-balance and one step behind, like in the fourth book.

The Giving Tree 40th Anniversary Edition Book with CD Overviews

"Once there was a tree . . . and she loved a little boy." So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein.

Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk . . . and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave.

This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation. Shel Silverstein has created a moving parable for readers of all ages that offers an affecting interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another’s capacity to love in return.

The Giving Tree 40th Anniversary Edition Book with CD RelateItems

The Giving Tree 40th Anniversary Edition Book with CD Specifications

To say that this particular apple tree is a "giving tree" is an understatement. In Shel Silverstein's popular tale of few words and simple line drawings, a tree starts out as a leafy playground, shade provider, and apple bearer for a rambunctious little boy. Making the boy happy makes the tree happy, but with time it becomes more challenging for the generous tree to meet his needs. When he asks for money, she suggests that he sell her apples. When he asks for a house, she offers her branches for lumber. When the boy is old, too old and sad to play in the tree, he asks the tree for a boat. She suggests that he cut her down to a stump so he can craft a boat out of her trunk. He unthinkingly does it. At this point in the story, the double-page spread shows a pathetic solitary stump, poignantly cut down to the heart the boy once carved into the tree as a child that said "M.E. + T." "And then the tree was happy... but not really." When there's nothing left of her, the boy returns again as an old man, needing a quiet place to sit and rest. The stump offers up her services, and he sits on it. "And the tree was happy." While the message of this book is unclear (Take and take and take? Give and give and give? Complete self-sacrifice is good? Complete self-sacrifice is infinitely sad?), Silverstein has perhaps deliberately left the book open to interpretation. (All ages) --Karin Snelson

The Giving Tree 40th Anniversary Edition Book with CD CustomerReview

It's interesting to see how visceral some people's negative reaction to this book is. They are troubled by the fact that not only does it seem unpleasant, but that they can't quite put their finger on what the moral is. So they oversimplify it, trash it, and want to hide it from their kids. For those who want to move beyond "TREE EQUALS SELFLESS MOM" here's my take on it: this book is possibly the most eloquent short essay on life and what it unfortunately means to grow up. Imagine the tree represents childhood joy and innocence. As the boy gets older he desires what we are all told to desire when we "grow up": try to make your fortune, settle down and have a family, and when you reach that midlife crisis go off on a prolonged retirement vacation. And at each step he takes / sells / kills a little bit of that original joy of living. But even at the end, even if it's nothing left but a stump, that original joy still remains to be there for you no matter how old you get.
Anyway, like I said, that's my take. You might have your own opinion. But however you look at it, no matter how old you are, THIS BOOK MAKES YOU THINK. If you can't handle a book that doesn't have pat answers and easy wrap ups, don't buy it. If you hate ever having to think about unpleasant realities and consider literature escapes into fantasy land, don't buy it. If you want to coddle your kids and never have a tough conversation with them, don't buy it. Otherwise, you're in for a bittersweet treat.

Blue Moon (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, Book 8) Overviews

The Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter backlist lights up the night.

In her eighth adventure, Anita Blake can't turn her back on a former lover during the full moon. Especially since he's behind bars-and he's a werewolf...

Blue Moon (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, Book 8) RelateItems

Blue Moon (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, Book 8) Specifications

Anita Blake makes a living raising the dead. She also executes rogue vampires and villains among the local were-folk. Marks bind her to Jean-Claude, the Master vampire of St. Louis and her lover, and to her ex-fiancé, a powerful werewolf who heads up the local pack. Anita shares some of their magic, and her own power over the dead keeps growing. But so does the body count and the situations that force Anita to bend or break her own rules.

In Blue Moon, Anita's ex Richard is jailed in Tennessee, accused of rape. When Anita arrives with a lawyer and an entourage of vampires and 'weres' supplied by Jean-Claude, it's clear that something is rotten in Myerton. The local cops are corrupt, and the trolls Richard was studying are threatened. But if she sticks around to investigate, the local Master vampire will attack her and her friends. The local werewolf clan isn't rushing to welcome her either, and her self-control is going to the, um, wolves.

Blue Moon is the eighth book in Hamilton's Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series; newcomers should start with earlier books. The protagonists' development and their relationships to each other and to the large cast of continuing secondary characters are what make these books so compelling. Be warned--there's steamy sex and graphic violence here, though Anita does reflect on her moral position. But if dark urban fantasy featuring those who hunt the night appeals, pounce on this series. --Nona Vero

Blue Moon (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, Book 8) CustomerReview

If anyone bothers to read this review, I'll probably get 0 helpful votes just for saying this novel deserves at least a four star rating based on the interactions between Anita and Richard (her werewolf ex-boyfriend). Richard has really been bulking up his physique since the last installment - even though he was already well-developed to begin with. During a conversation with Anita, a couple threads on his shirt become loose while he is unintentionally flexing a muscle. Embarrassed, he explains, "That's the third time that's happened." As he tends to the newly ripped hole, his muscles are flexing all over the place, causing more tears until he basically busts through the shirt like the Hulk. Hilarious.

Obviously I prefer Richard to Jean-Claude and can't understand why everyone is obsessed with the master vampire and his eh, flamboyance. C'mon. Revealing frilly blouses adorned with lace, tight-ass leather jeans, knee-high pirate boots, the choppy French and constantly calling Anita "ma petite." Jean-Claude is such a narcissist. The last novel he straightened his hair, curling the ends. No matter how Hamilton insists that he is masculine, I'm just not seeing it. He probably gets manicures and plucks his eyebrows, too. The only reason he wants Anita is because she's a challenge. At times I wish Anita would just stake him already. Richard the werewolf on the other hand - rugged, manly, scrumptious. For once I'd like to see the hairy boy scout get the girl. The novel contains some disturbing elements (i.e. gay sadistic vampire rapist) but Richard totally makes this novel worth reading.

I am writing this review as just an FYI. We own the Roger Priddy/Bright Baby "Trucks" board book. I bought this for my son's 2nd birthday and am planning on returning it. It seems like a great picture book, but all of the pictures from "Trucks" are scattered inside this book, so it's like owning a bigger version of "Trucks." If you don't have "Trucks," than this book is just fine and has excellent pictures. There's a big 80s era van labeled "minivan," which is a little off putting, but the book definitely seems like a keeper for a little truck lover. My son is craaaazy about trucks, but the similarities to the smaller edition "Trucks" is just too much, otherwise it would be a keeper.

Always Watching (The Rayne Tour, Book 1) CustomerReview

I was actually impressed. This one took me by surprise from the beginning with immediately seeing into the killers eyes. Then, we switch to Shaley and her rock star mom Rayne. The length of the plot is three days, but by the end I feel like Shaley and that it was more like a few months, but in a good way. We follow through the lives of Shaley and her mom as they deal with the murder of a close friend. From there, everything begins to be not what they thought and people not who they thought. Even up until the end, I was shocked to figure out who the killer was. The writers did a great job of keeping you guessing and turning pages as fast as you could to get to the next one. I literally didn't want to put it down. I just had to know what the killer was going to do next and try to get some clue as to who it might be. The writing only switched between Shaley's perspective and the killers - a fact to which I was very grateful. The transitions were smooth and easy to get. I liked how it ended and from the preview I got of the next in line, it literally picks up where this one leaves off. I think this is a great beginning of a great mystery series. The Christian influence is actually barely there, which is a nice backdrop for Christian fiction. It's not in your face, or shoved down any characters throat, it's just simple reminders that someone is watching out for you - someone good.

The Complete Book of Discipleship: On Being and Making Followers of Christ (The Navigators Reference Library) CustomerReview

Bill Hull, The Complete Book of Discipleship, On Being and Making Followers of Christ (Colorado Springs, NavPress, 2006)

Any time a book has `The Complete Book of...' anything in its title, my first instinct is to find holes in the `completeness' of the material. The burden of proof on an author such as Mr. Hull is especially difficult when the subject has a 2000 year history, with such lustrous authorities as Basil the Great, Anthony the Great, St. Benedict, St. Francis, Ignatius of Loyola, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer. My overall reaction is that while the book doesn't have much to say about the first 1900 years of Christianity, or the whole matter of Catholic monasticism in general, the book does do a credible job of covering the subject for 21st century Protestants, especially those who may have been inspired by the life of Herr Bonhoeffer. If I were to fault the book on any one major point, it would be the lack of a comprehensive Bibliography, especially one aimed at covering those first 1900 years. This is an excellent second book on Discipleship, after reading Bonhoeffer's 'The Cost of Discipleship'.

If one reads about church attendance in pre-Revolutionary War New England, you may be surprised at the laxness of church membership in the 1720's, which lead to a multi-tiered policy of admission to the church's sacraments. Pastors, even powerful, well-known pastors, would let you in to communion and baptize your babies on very weak criteria for membership. But for the full-fledged member, the expectations are very high. Today, the expectations among the clergy for dedicated members seems to have dropped to nothing, and all emphasis is put on both encouraging drawing in and holding new members and on Missional projects. Both are worthy Christian activities, but it still means strong `discipleship', along with `spiritual formation' disciplines seem to have diminished to insignificance for adults in small to middle-sized churches. Thus, one of the strengths of this book is to include thoughts about both discipleship and spiritual formation, although the emphasis is certainly on the former.

Another casualty of `casual' church and denominational affiliations, at least among Protestants, may be the fact that we have lost sight of the theological grounds of `good behavior' by Protestants. The Reformation discarded the entire Catholic notion, common in the 15th--16th century, that one can pay off sin by a wide variety of sacramental means such as confession and non-sacramental means such as the purchase of indulgences and by acts of charity. Of course, one can also insure ones path to heaven by avoiding sin. But Luther and Calvin and all the other reformers endorsed the doctrine of sola fide, or justification by faith alone. But that opened up the can of worms over the motives for behaving oneself. The Protestant answer is that by achieving grace, through faith and the will of God, one is imbued by a love of the Christ Jesus, and wish to emulate him, follow him, be like him, as much as humanly possible. Ironically, this is exactly what the Catholic monastic orders do so well, and what the modern Protestants do not so much.

Discipleship is basically the disciple of being a Protestant disciple of Jesus, as much as that is practical in the modern world and the modern church. There is a 40 page history of discipleship, divided neatly between Catholic and Protestant exemplars (Some of the facts in this history are a bit loose. For pre-Reformation figures, go to good scholarly sources). It is no accident that 25% of this history is spent covering the teachings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the closest thing Protestantism has in the 20th century to a saint. Based on my earlier theological sketch, Bonhoeffer hits the nail on the head when he says `Christianity without discipleship is always Christianity without Christ'. For a Protestant, our lives should be all about emulating Christ in both thought and action. Bonhoeffer says `An abstract Christology, a doctrinal system, a general religious knowledge on the subject of grace...render discipleship superfluous...and are essentially inimical to ...following Christ.' One may go so far as to paraphrase Bonhoeffer by saying that Christianity without discipleship is not Christianity.

At the heart of Hull's presentation is a six-fold definition of `being conformed to Christ's image. This is a far simpler job, but with similarities to, Jonathan Edwards markers of those who are among the elect, since it relies only on behavioral markers. The signs are transformed mind, character, relationships, habits, service, and influence.

The last marker is especially important, because it highlights the fact that good discipleship works best in small groups, where discipleship leaders can foster the growth of discipleship in others. It should be no surprise that spiritual formation also works best in small groups, and this book is all about doing both. But it is also about being Missional, about going out into the world and demonstrating the kind of life which monks live in the safety of their cloisters.

The Missional aspect of life is not done simply because it's a good thing to do. It is a matter of survival. If a group's activities become too ingrown, if they never venture outside the church, they will simply wither and die out.

A gut impression I get from a lot of books on spirituality and Christianity in general is that there is a lot of wind, but little substance. While this may not be a complete diet, this book does offer concrete nourishment for Protestant discipleship.

Hi! I just wanted to tell you a little bit about myself and this book/series. I am a Special Education teacher. From my experience working as a teacher, I know that boys are reluctant readers. I have 3 boys of my own. That's why I've made it my goal to motivate unmotivated or reluctant readers. I find books I think the boys will read and read them myself, so I can recommend it and discuss it with them if they decide to read it.
So, I started a Guys Read chapter on my block for the pre-teen boys in my neighborhood. I only have about 7 members, but I'm okay with that. We have so much fun. We take field trips to enhance the experience. To further enhance the experience, this year I've added books that also have the movie. Even though this series doesn't have a movie, I have included it in my summer book club reading list. I know the boys on my block will love this. It's written for pre-teen boys and girls. There are a couple of pictures but I definitely wouldn't describe it as a picture book. The pictures merely enhance the book. The kids are the heroines of the book so children will love that. It's nice clean reading. It's great for parents as well. If you're the type of parent who likes to know what your children are reading, I'd say give this series a try. You won't be disappointed.

The Devil in Winter (The Wallflowers, Book 3) Overviews

A devil's bargain

Easily the shyest Wallflower, Evangeline Jenner stands to become the wealthiest, once her inheritance comes due. Because she must first escape the clutches of her unscrupulous relatives, Evie has approached the rake Viscount St. Vincent with a most outrageous proposition: marriage!

Sebastian's reputation is so dangerous that thirty seconds alone with him will ruin any maiden's good name. Still, this bewitching chit appeared, unchaperoned, on his doorstep to offer her hand. Certainly an aristocrat with a fine eye for beauty could do far worse.

But Evie's proposal comes with a condition: no lovemaking after their wedding night. She will never become just another of the dashing libertine's callously discarded broken hearts -- which means Sebastian will simply have to work harder at his seductions...or perhaps surrender his own heart for the very first time in the name of true love.

The Devil in Winter (The Wallflowers, Book 3) CustomerReview

I started AND finished Devil in Winter by Lisa Kleypas in one night. You all were right, it was a fantastic read and this has got to be the best Kleypas I've read so far. Almost didn't seem like the same author (for me). Extremely sensual and sexy if you can believe that! (I usually associate Kleypas's writing as more on the purply prose side, but not this one! She's upped the wattage with DIW!) I just adored Sebastian and of course Evie made my heart melt. Loved seeing her come into her own and find her inner strength, and yet allow herself to need Sebastian as well as vice versa. Of the Wall Flowers I probably relate the most to Lillian, but Evie? She's my favorite.

Evie Jenner, the heroine of this tale, is the shyest of the Wall Flowers, the four women who struck up a friendship over the commonality of not being favored at dances and balls. Evie is a wall flower of the truest sense, stammering and blushing whenever someone talks to her, but she's also the most developed character in Kleypas's Wall Flower series, with her background garnering instant sympathy from the reader.

The hero, Sebatian St. Vincent, is a notorious rake out for nothing but his own pleasures. However his self-indulgence and selfishness takes a turn after his desperate financial situation forces him to agree to Evie's plan of a marriage of convenience. Ah, but don't feel pity for Evie, because the proposed marriage is her way out as well- for her marriage to St. Vincent will allow her to escape her over-bearing and abusive relatives. (Yep they're after her money in the most cold manipulative way!)

This is a classic historical romance at it's best and it's perfectly yummy. I picked this up at the library but I'm gonna have to buy it now because it's a keeper!

My First Book of Cutting (Kumon Workbooks, Commonwealth Edition) Overviews

2005 Finalist for the Association of Educational Publishers’ Distinguished Achievement Award, this workbook gives children the opportunity to practice using scissors accurately. Many children have difficulty cutting exactly on the lines, so this workbook has children begin cutting on thick lines before moving gradually to thinner ones. Children will eventually be comfortable cutting straight lines, curves, and circles, and the practice will help develop their manual dexterity.

My First Book of Cutting (Kumon Workbooks, Commonwealth Edition) CustomerReview

My daughter is 4 and just finished this book. She LOVED it would try to get out of meals early so she could go cut! She was slow to start but all of a sudden it "clicked" for her and I am so proud that she made it look easy towards the end. Maybe she has my art teacher gene!? I am hoping! My only complaint is that it is easier for the child to cut once the page is separate from the book and there are no perforated edges to tear the individual pages out. I had to basically break the binding to get the pages out and getting them out without tearing into the content of the page seemed challenging for me! Why don't they have perforated pages?? Other than that, the book gets an A+.

I've been using this as a social story to teach kids how to cope with stress and put their anxiety in it's place. This is a tool I use in collaboration with parents and teachers. It makes no sense for me to teach this by myself if we're not all using it as a united front. I've used it in small groups and individually. There is a five point stress scale and it is awesome and helpful to children. Kids who are on the spectrum or have anxiety disorders could really benefit from reading this every day. I've seen a lot of success with this social story. Share it with the parents first and see if they would be on board to use it as a tool. Very grateful for this one. Helps me be a better school counselor.

The People of Sparks (Books of Ember) Overviews

The People of Sparks picks up where The City of Ember leaves off. Lina and Doon have emerged from the underground city to the exciting new world above, and it isn’t long before they are followed by the other inhabitants of Ember. The Emberites soon come across a town where they are welcomed, fed, and given places to sleep. But the town’s resources are limited and it isn’t long before resentment begins to grow between the two groups. When anonymous acts of vandalism push them toward violence, it’s up to Lina and Doon to discover who’s behind the vandalism and why, before it’s too late.

The People of Sparks (Books of Ember) Specifications

When teenagers Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow lead their people up out of the Earth, fleeing their dying underground city of Ember, everything is new and a little frightening to the refugees--the sun and the moon, birds, trees, fire…and the people of Ember are strange to the 322 citizens of Sparks, one of the few towns on Earth to survive the time of The Disaster. How can they feed and house the 400 Emberites, the leaders of Sparks wonder, when they have just begun to be able to feed themselves comfortably? But if they don’t, these underground people with no survival skills will surely die in the wastelands. They take them in as best they can, but grumbling and bad feeling grows on both sides. Lina returns from a failed search for her persistent vision of a city of light to find the town, egged on by the power-hungry young thug Tick, once again at the point of war, forgetting how the Earth has been destroyed before. But Lina has seen the devastation left by The Disaster, and so she risks a brave move of reconciliation, and when Doon exposes Tick’s trickery, the two sides join as the new people of Sparks.

In this exciting and solidly constructed sequel to The City of Ember, Jeanne DuPrau moves the story on entrancingly, bringing along her cast of characters from underground and adding new dimensions and relationships as the action escalates to a satisfying conclusion that still allows for further volumes in this fine fantasy. (Ages 10 to 14) --Patty Campbell

The People of Sparks (Books of Ember) CustomerReview

Upon finishing the City of Ember, the first amazing book of the series, I was curious to learn what would happen next. I had high hopes considering how wonderful The City of Ember was. I was not disappointed - it included all the aspects I enjoyed about the first book.

The book covers the struggle to exist peacefully together and avoid war. The Emberites leave their home and enter the city of Sparks, where they meet many challenges with a huge group of over four-hundred people. The reluctant Sparks come to their aid, providing shelter and food for the new people. However, tensions soon arise, beginning with food and then shifting to a wider range of problems. Soon their is a lurking hostility between the Emberites and the people of Sparks, led on by unknown attacks to both sides. Soon the two groups are on the edge of war - and again, it is up to Lina and Doon to save the day.

We also meet a wide variety of new and interesting characters. The city's three mayors - the kind Mary Waters, the harsh and cold Ben Barlow, and the undecided Wilmer Dent struggle to decide what to do about the people of Ember in the hard times between them. We meet the city's one and only doctor, the busy and absent-minded Dr. Hester, and her nephew who lives with her, the mean and destructive Torren. We learn more about old characters as well, and meet a new Emberite, a boy called Tick who is the leader in the soon-to-be war between the Emberites and the People of Sparks.

This book is fantasy and adventure themed, but also teaches lessons about how war is destructive, and destroys things. We find more out about Ember and what protection it served, as well as what destroyed so much hundreds of years before. All in all, it is a great addition to the series, and a great book.
