The Maze Runner Overviews

When Thomas wakes up in the lift, the only thing he can remember is his first name. His memory is blank. But he’s not alone. When the lift’s doors open, Thomas finds himself surrounded by kids who welcome him to the Glade—a large, open expanse surrounded by stone walls.

Just like Thomas, the Gladers don’t know why or how they got to the Glade. All they know is that every morning the stone doors to the maze that surrounds them have opened. Every night they’ve closed tight. And every 30 days a new boy has been delivered in the lift.

Thomas was expected. But the next day, a girl is sent up—the first girl to ever arrive in the Glade. And more surprising yet is the message she delivers.

Thomas might be more important than he could ever guess. If only he could unlock the dark secrets buried within his mind.

The Maze Runner CustomerReview

To my fellow dystopian, postapoc, YA fic lovers - I highly recommend this one! I couldn't find this in my local library (although it was at my son's book fair) so I am buying a copy and donating it!

PROS: Like Hunger Games meets Lord of the Flies, it strikes a wonderful balance between the grittiness of the boys' interactions and the affection they necessarily have for each other. There is one scene with Thomas and another boy that had such genuine tenderness I cried (due in no small part because I am the mother of three sons). The glade slang worked for me and allowed a realism to the harshness and language which is not always possible in YA fiction (this is in contrast to the Uglies series slang which irritated me). The book is strongly plot-driven and moves fast (almost to a fault), but I didn't find the characters suffered. In fact, I had a real attachment to Thomas, Chuck, Newt, Minho, and even Alby! I have to admit I was blindsided by the Epilogue and had to read it twice to believe it!

CONS: The "answers" seem a little bit contrived, but within the confines of the reality created by Dashner, it worked for me. Some complained the ending was a little abrupt, which it is, but it propelled you right into Book 2. I did have a small problem picturing Thomas and the Grievers for some reason, but that was my only real "show, don't tell" complaint.

It has a cliffhanger of an ending though so you might want to wait for the second one that comes out in Oct!

PARENTS NOTE: The grade suggestion of 6 - 10 is probably appropriate based on reading level, but the graphic violence, the sexual aggression hinted at when the girl arrives, and the thinly-veiled use of the "f word" would probably push my grade-level suggestion toward the higher end of that range.
